About me

My publishing credits include Kirsty’s Kite, Albatross Books, distributed in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and USA, and Grandma Buffalo, May and Me, published by Sasquatch Books in Seattle. Macmillan later bought the educational rights to Grandma Buffalo. As a retired teacher, I enjoy having my writing used in classrooms.

Growing up near my grandparents’ farm east of Portland, Oregon, I heard stories of my mother’s childhood on a homestead in Montana. I listened as dad shared stories of his uncle, Edward S. Curtis, who traveled photographing Native Americans. Sometimes I blended fact and fiction, which led me into trouble.

I still love to share stories, some based upon facts, others from imagination. I have coached writers of all ages, from four to 84 as a language arts teacher in public schools, and workshop leader in homeschools, and college classes. Like my character May in GRANDMA BUFFALO, I enjoy fishing, gardening, and watching wildlife with the wonderful man in my life.

As a child, my daughter wrote and illustrated stories that made me laugh. Now, I enjoy listening to stories told by her children, ages four to eight.

Carol Stilz is the author of two books for children, KIRSTY’S KITE, and GRANDMA BUFFALO, MAY AND ME. She lives in Idaho Falls where she loves to tell funny tales to her grandchildren, especially those about her two cats.
